Aimed squarely at folks who value a soft, quiet ride and coddling features above blazing performance and sports-car handling, Lexus' midsize ES luxury sedan series has done well for itself. Success has come by giving those buyers exactly what they want in a package boasting the company's trademark refinement.
The Lexus ES is reborn for 2007 and is now called the ES 350. As has been the case for past ES models, the new model has underlying mechanical similarity to the Toyota Camry. As with its redesigned-for-'07 sibling, the front-wheel-drive ES 350 has a larger engine, a 3.5-liter V6, paired to a new six-speed automatic transmission. The combination provides the car with considerably more power while still offering respectable fuel economy.
Lexus' engineers and designers have expended considerable effort on making sure their product is indeed perceived as an entry-luxury sedan. The car's new styling has sharp creases and squinting taillights that tie it in with other Lexus vehicles, and there are plenty of new luxury features like keyless entry and a optional Navigation with Back-Up Camera. Always one to avoid being left behind in any competition, BMW stepped up with a new 3 Series Convertible for 2007 that comes with a three-piece, fully automatic, one-button up-and-down hardtop. Each way takes less than a half-minute. When the top's up, the car is as close to a two-door hardtop in ride, handling and interior comfort as is possible with a removable roof. With the top down, it's everything a convertible should be but with almost none of the penalties, like overly blustery, hairdo-destroying wind and vision-blurring cowl shake, commonly associated with open-top cars. Just installed a 1995 3.6L Motor! The car fly's now, and has power to match it's looks.
Both the 911T and 911E disappeared from the 1974 lineup as the 911 got its most serious makeover yet. Taking their place were a letter-free 911 and, finally in America, a Carrera. All featured versions of the 2.7-liter engine introduced on the Carrera RS and new styling to accommodate energy-absorbing bumpers mandated by U.S. regulations.
The new body-colored bumpers made the '74 911s look more contemporary and featured black rubber boots at the ends that looked like bellows. All the engines also adopted electronic fuel injection as emissions regulations grew even tighter. That put the output of the 911's 8.0-to-1 engine at 143 horsepower, and the 911S' and Carrera's 8.5-to-1 power plant at 167 horsepower.
The U.S. Carrera carried the same bodywork, wheels and tires as the European Carrera RS, but had to stay with the 911S engine to meet emissions. Other changes to all 911s included new aluminum and magnesium suspension components, new front seats with integrated head restraints, some other interior revisions and a rigid fiberglass top for the Targa. This vehicle is also equipped with a nice stereo system, Recaro Seats, beautiful Modular rims, Strut bars and adjustable torsion Bars. The reborn Speedster bowed alongside the new Porsche Carrera 4 at the 1988 Frankfurt Show. Predictably, it was an instant hit. Unlike the Spartan prototype, this new-yet-nostalgic Porsche 911 catered to comfort with roll-up windows (instead of side curtains) and a slightly taller, more conventional windshield (for some semblance of top-up head room). Most usual Porsche 911 options were available, but ordering too many would quickly swell the $65,480 base price to nearly $75,000.
Perhaps as a showroom lure, Porsche announced production of only 2,100 units, then delayed building any Speedsters until the summer of 1989. As it turned out, all but 159 wore the Turbo Look package, but every one got the Turbo's beefier chassis and heavy-duty four-piston cross-drilled disc brakes.
Recalling its 356 forebear, the Porsche 911 Speedster used a simpler manual top than the normal Cabriolet, with no thick inner insulation and or interior headliner. The result was a thinner roof that could stow beneath a flip-up fiberglass cover behind a rear package shelf, an arrangement prompted Porsche to forget the normal token back seat of other 911s. The cover's double-hump design didn't please everyone -- least of all Butzi Porsche, still having his say -- and top operation required some fiddling. Otherwise, the Speedster was pure 911.
But because it was designed pre-Carrera 4, it was not a Porsche 911 of the future. In fact, the '89 Speedster would be the last 911 model built at the old Stuttgart factory. Starting with the 964 series, Porsche shifted 911 production to a modern new plant near its Stuttgart headquarters.
Undeniably, the Speedster had "collectible" written all over it, and all 2,100 -- of which just 800 came to-- were quickly snapped up by would-be profiteers. And profit they did, but only for a time. Though asking prices soared above $90,000 within three years, according to Road & Track, Porsche would have another last laugh by offering an improved 911 Speedster five years on. America
Ferry Porsche turned a vigorous 80 on September 19, 1989, and his workers gave him a splendid birthday present in the Panamericana, a Porsche Carrera 4 with chunky, futuristic bodywork rendered in fiberglass and carbon fiber. The name, of course, honored the great Mexican road races of the Fifties, the Carreras Panamericana, where the Type 550 Spyder and 718 RSK had proven themselves so conclusively.
The Panamericana's unique feature was a roofline tapered sharply down from windshield to rear deck as a frame for slim doors and rear-side windows. A canvas cover allowed the entire cockpit to be opened to the sun. It was a striking machine that was destined to remain Dr. Porsche's alone -- a pity, for a production version could have been wondrous -- a "Speedster" that truly would herald the future.

You will not find a nicer American Roadster in the country. There were less than 40 of these made in 1993, it is a true widebody car. The owner has had the car repainted and I dare you to find a flaw. PW, PL, CD, and AC are just some of the features. It has a 5speed transmission, and stainless steel dual exhaust. Only 33K miles!
